We have started school and I just thought it was time to vent. I hate starting school 2 weeks before Labor Day for a couple of reasons. The best time of the year for me is August and September. The weather is pleasant and the scenery is beautiful. Secondly, you just get into school and then have a holiday. Just start after the holiday for goodness sakes. The even worse thing, is that here in Idaho we have a thing called harvest break. We get out of school for 10 days in the middle of October, so less than 10% of our students can help harvest potatoes. Not that I am complaining about breaks, but why not start school 3 weeks later or better yet 6 weeks later and then stay in school until mid June. June weather is horrible here in Idaho. We play softball in snow for Pete's sake.
Now who ever came up with year around school should be shot. No, not literally, but what a stupid idea. I was in third grade when my school district experimented with it. I couldn't remember which week I was supposed to be in school and which week I was supposed to pretend it was summer. Another thing that is horrible are all the different ideas on daily class schedules for high schools. Some go to class 7 periods a day 2 semesters a year, others go to 4 classes one day, the other 4 the following day for 2 semesters and yet other schools go to class 5 periods a day for 3 trimesters. Is one better than the other? Who knows? Who cares? The point is no one is the same, but they all think they have the best idea. It's kind of like driving on one side of the street in one country and the other side in other countries. Just get over yourselves and conform.
Well, at least I feel better now. Hope you and your kids have a great school year.

Erick -- so glad you are doing a blog about your family! This will be great for me to see what is happening with my favorite family in Rexburg. Email me at wadejacqueline@yahoo.com and I'll send you an invite to our blog for you and Cam. When are you guys coming to Boise?
O.k....so after living in TN, I realize that year round school in SO CAL would have been just fine...the weather is always the same.
I think that they've figured out the weather thing out here. We start at the beginning of AUG which is the most horibble humid time of the year, and we get out in May right before Memorial Day.
It's great when you get out, but BAD when you have to start back so early.
If our kids wouldn't turn out freaky, I would totally homeschool, so that I could run my own year round school when we take off days whenever WE want.
We are in Utah. I hated that we started 2 weeks before the labor day holiday. We actually started one week earlier than last year.
Being from SO CAL, I agree with Alice. Year round would be fine with the weather alway's being the same.
I actually know you. Grew up in the same ward with your family.
Last name use to be Ewing. I fallow Alice's blog.
